Removal of Flagstick During Play

Recommended Guidelines as of October 1st 2020

As of October 1st, 2020, competition golfers will once again have the choice of removing the flagstick during competition events. It is requested that all golfers adhere to the guidelines and recommendations below for the removal of the flag during play in the interest of safety to all golfers.

  • The decision to remove the flag or leave it in the hole is up to each individuals preference. The rules of golf allow players to leave the pin in the hole if they choose to.
  • It is recommended that each group has only one player remove and return the flag on each hole. Once the flag is removed, please keep handling to a minimum by not passing the flag around and place the flag on the ground in a position not affecting any player.
  • It is recommended that when handling the flag that players do so using a towel or glove where possible.
  • Each player choosing to remove the flag will do so at their own risk and must be responsible for carrying their own hand sanitizer for use if required. It is strongly recommended that hand sanitizer is used after making contact with the flag on every occasion.
  • To keep flag handling to a minimum and keeping pace of play in mind, it is recommended that players that do not wish to remove the flag putt first or last in order.
  • At this time, the noodle will remain in place, please be careful when removing flagstick and returning to the cup to avoid any damage to the hole.

Please note that the Local Rule relating to a 2 stoke penalty for flag removal is no longer in place as of October 1st 2020.
